For 20 years, my son lived in a world of silence. Though he did not speak, he was always listening, always learning, always understanding. Then, at the age of 20, something remarkable happened: he started to communicate. For the first time, his thoughts, his wishes, and his voice began to emerge.
Silence had often felt limiting and isolating. His desire to communicate was strong, and when he couldn’t, that frustration was sometimes misunderstood as “behavior.” But once communication opened up, a whole world of possibilities unfolded. He expressed his desire to learn to swim, to ride a horse, to lose weight, and to join a gym. And this is only the beginning. We started this journey with little information, guided by curiosity, hope, and a deep desire to connect. What began as a mother’s wish to understand her child has grown into a clear and purposeful mission: to support nonspeaking, minimally speaking, and unreliable speaking individuals in accessing authentic communication.
I believe in presuming competence, honoring autonomy, and ensuring that every individual is given the respect, dignity, and opportunity to be heard.
Building Hope Through Meaningful Community Connections
At Letters of Hope, LLC, we believe every individual deserves the opportunity to live a meaningful life, make informed choices, build lasting relationships, and participate fully in their community. Our mission is to empower individuals with developmental disabilities through individualized, person-centered supports that foster independence, confidence, self-determination, and meaningful participation in everyday life.
We recognize that behavior is communication. Every individual communicates in their own unique way, and we are committed to understanding each person’s strengths, preferences, interests, and support needs. By building trusting relationships and listening beyond words, we create opportunities for individuals to express themselves, make choices, and actively participate in the experiences that matter most to them.
Our services are guided by the principles of person-centered planning, participant choice, dignity, respect, and community inclusion. We provide individualized one-to-one support through coaching, modeling, prompting, cueing, and positive reinforcement, helping participants develop skills while engaging in activities that align with their Individual Program Plan (IPP) goals and personal interests.
Rather than creating separate programs or isolated activities, we support individuals in accessing the opportunities that already exist within their communities. Whether visiting a library, volunteering, shopping, attending a community class, exploring a museum, enjoying a local park, or participating in recreational and wellness activities, every experience becomes an opportunity to build confidence, strengthen relationships, develop new skills, and increase independence.
Our approach is grounded in the HOPE Framework™, which reflects our commitment to:
- Healthy Relationships – Building positive connections with family, peers, and community members.
- Opportunities for Participation – Expanding access to meaningful community experiences based on each person’s interests and goals.
- Personal Growth & Self-Advocacy – Supporting individuals in making choices, solving problems, building confidence, and expressing their preferences.
- Empowerment Through Meaningful Experiences – Using everyday activities to develop skills that promote greater independence and successful participation in community life.
At Letters of Hope, we celebrate each person’s unique abilities and believe that meaningful support begins with respect, compassion, and the belief that everyone has the capacity to learn, grow, and contribute. We are committed to creating opportunities where individuals are valued, included, and empowered to pursue lives of purpose, connection, and hope.
